Through the years, the qualifying level for the earning of black type
in sales catalogs has steadily been raised.
Here is a condensed history of the evolution of those requirements for
stakes races:
1985 through 1988, purse of $15,000 qualified.
1989 only, purse of $20,000 qualified
1990 through 2001, purse of $25,000 qualified
2002 only, purse of $30,000 qualified
2003 only, purse of $35,000 qualified
2004 to 2006, purse of $40,000 qualified.
2007 only, purse of $45,000 qualified.
Beginning in 2002, maiden races, starter allowance races, and
claiming races no longer qualified.
Beginning in 2003, races with earnings conditions no longer
qualified
